AVID Mission Statement
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is a sixth through twelfth grade program that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university. At Richard E. Byrd Middle School, AVID is offered as an elective class in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
AVID Curriculum
The AVID curriculum is based on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR). The class also includes tutoring sessions that provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum. Additionally, AVID students receive information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, scholarship opportunities, and college admission requirement information.
How do I apply for AVID at Byrd MS?
To apply for the AVID elective, students must have satisfactory citizenship, good attendance, and a GPA between 2.00 and 3.50. AVID students must also be motivated to work toward college eligibility. https://forms.gle/vMVETYrYngy7JtGWA
